On October 1st, our annual Sponsor a Child for the Holiday gift gathering effort was launched, with the agency receiving nearly 1,000 wish requests from those in our care. To meet these wishes, staff began reaching out to local businesses, organizations and community members. We sat in front of grocery stores, manned booths at Farmers and spoke in numerous churches. We shared the needs and how everyone could help meet them in every way possible within our community.
We blew up Facebook newsfeeds and flooded Twitter with 140 characters of why it matters to give back. We asked the community to come together to help us give our children, youth and families a holiday to remember—fulfill the wishes that they had specifically requested. And what happened was incredible.
The community responded with a resounding, “I’d love to!”
Over the following weeks, we received emails, phone calls and Facebook messages asking how to get involved in the Sponsor a Child effort. We heard questions like, “I know this 14 year old asked for red converse but what size clothes does she wear? I want to give her more than just shoes.” And, “Do you have a family in extra need? My office would like to give a family tickets to Disneyland.” We were quickly overwhelmed by the generosity of our community.
After weeks of community involvement, every wish was sponsored and on December 1st the gifts poured through our doors.
Clothes, toys and bikes filled our office for days. We played Santa’s elves and sorted nearly 1000 gifts!
Volunteers got to wrapping and made sure all the gifts were ready to be placed in living rooms across the Central Coast. Together, we fulfilled nearly 1000 wishes—brightening the holidays for the children, youth and families impacted by trauma here on the Central Coast.
We recognize our Sponsor a Child campaign is as successful as our community enables it to be. It’s been said, “Your greatness is not what you have; it’s what you give.” By that standard, our community is GREAT! We couldn’t be more thankful.
Thank you for everyone who gave a special gift or volunteered their time to help us spread the word! Your partnership and investments in the lives of others make a difference in our community, and we thank you for donating your time and resources to help us achieve our mission. This year more often than ever before we’ve heard our families say, “No one has ever been so generous or so thoughtful to us!” You made that possible, Central Coast! THANK YOU!
