Don’t Call Me Broken: A Personal Reflection on Trauma and Words

I get irritated when I hear the word "broken" used to describe kids and families who are struggling. Although I hear it less often than I once did--hopefully this indicates that people are becoming more informed--I still hear it used to describe individuals in our world who have behavioral challenges, difficulty coping, poor family dynamics, troubles in their relationships with others, and/or are just suffering with their overall life functions.

Relationships are interesting. They are kind of like cells in our body. You know how cells are always bumping into each other, some attach to make new things, some just float around independently, and some join together to fight off bad stuff. We are always bumping into people through the routines of our everyday lives. Through this process we make new friends or acquaintances, maybe even enemies; but from time to time, a relationship will just click and a real connection and unusual bond is forged. Well, I feel very fortunate to have “bumped” into Jac Jacobs, his wife, Trish, and their son, Mathew. Ours has definitely been a relationship that clicked; and for 14 years later we’re still fast friends.

Relationships. There has been much written on the topic of relationships. Ranging from difficult to understand clinical research articles to blogs, books and websites, you can find information on every type of relationship in just about every type of format. Romantic relationships, family relationships, work relationships, casual relationships, nurturing relationships, dysfunctional relationships, healthy relationships, abusive relationships… which can only lead us to one conclusion—Relationships are Important!
