This past week, a close friend shared a story with me that lifted my spirits after I shared some of the challenges I’ve been facing. She works at a small animal shelter where she oversees the volunteers who help walk the dogs. Recently, she handed out slices of fresh fruit to a group of teens who were volunteering on a hot day. Their excitement was so genuine. She said they acted like they’d been given money instead of slices of pineapple. Hearing her chuckle as she recounted their happiness brought a smile to my face and reminded me of how powerful simple joys can be.
I like to call these moments “heart spackle.” They’re the small stories, pictures, or gestures that fill in the cracked spaces of our hearts and remind us of life’s little gifts. Whether it’s watching a child learn to ride a bike for the first time or seeing an uplifting video online, these little joys can refuel our hope and resilience during difficult times.

So how do we stay hopeful when life feels hopeless? Start with yourself. Honor your limits, rest when needed, and use coping strategies that bring calm like deep breathing, a long drive with the windows down, or singing along to a favorite song. Share laughter, talk honestly with people you trust, and give yourself permission to feel both joy and sadness.
To ignite hope in others, point out their strengths, offer them empathy, and speak gratitude often. Even simple words like, “I’m so glad you’re here” can make a lasting impact on someone. And remind yourself of one of my favorite quotes: “When things change inside you, things change around you.”
