I’m Jonathan, a Support Specialist with Family Care Network serving in the Wraparound Program. In my role, I get the privilege of working alongside incredible youth and families, each with their own story of resilience. Recently, I worked with a foster family whose foster youth received Wraparound services to help him transition into their care after a short hospitalization. I know that the compassion and commitment this family showed to help this youth thrive will stay with me long after services end and will influence how I approach my work from here on out.

Our Wraparound program is designed to support families so that youth can remain in safe, nurturing homes rather than move into higher, more restrictive levels of care. Before this youth was welcomed into his new foster home, the foster parents asked to learn more about trauma and its effect on young lives. They eagerly embraced courses, interventions, and open dialogue with our team about their child’s experiences, and how best to meet his individual needs, and build on his strengths. Their willingness to collaborate built a strong, healthy environment where their foster youth learned that his voice—that he—mattered greatly.

In childhood, this kid had experienced a lot of first-hand trauma and had no idea how to process any of it. As a result, his behavior often reflected what he couldn’t voice—his pain, fear, mistrust, and confusion. With patience and consistency, he learned to process these feelings and express them in more effective ways. Now, instead of spiraling, he’s able to pause to listen, and, because he has rebuilt his trust, can move forward knowing he has people who love and support him. Together, we use the simple tool of asking, “Is this a little thing or a big thing?”—a question echoed by his foster parents, therapist, and staff that helps him slow down so he can better process whatever is happening in the moment.

Over the past year, his sense of self-worth has grown tremendously, helping him to build real relationships with his foster family, try new activities, and be more receptive in his healing. His foster family’s nurturing, affirmations, and positivity has helped him reshape his attitude to be more strength-based. As Wraparound services close, I know this youth will continue to thrive, surrounded by a family who truly believes in him and is committed to him.
